First year of coach Stompo

December 2023 - NEWS FROM THE SCULLERS

… these lines are written in 2024. The Scullers moving forward in year 33 since our first boating in 1991. One reason enough to lift our glasses and congratulate all our members, athletes and friends for this amazing stand in the world of USRowing.

After missing out our year 30 celebrating activities because of Covid we decided that year 33 will be our number to celebrate. Later this year we will all come together and celebrate this amazing number. We already started to create our guest list and of course you will have the opportunity for you to sign-up soon to.

Training Camp with Miami Beach Rowing

Between Christmas and New Years … what better to do than organizing a training camp and use the time to make new friends. Members of SCRC, Miami Beach Rowing and the Sarasota Scullers came together at the Nathan Benderson Park. Coach Eduardo Camillis and Coach “Stompo” brought the athletes together - four eyes see more than two. Exchanging expertise and training side by side for four days brought all athletes closer together. We want to thank you Eduardo and his team to come up to Sarasota.

Both coaches agreed that this was an amazing experience and already discussed to redo the camp next year. Wait for more news and opportunities to participate.

Training and Racing - side by side

our teams turning at NBP

December … another great month to discover tools

Our new members (and some (nicely said) not so experienced old members) of our team had the opportunity to find out what the word 7/16 could might mean. Riggers came on and off the boats, boat straps and teeing down boats became another skill learned (maybe). The athletes had fun learning more about their equipment and seeing how unexpected skills helped everyone. Thank you to Eitan, Luke and Leon who helped everyone with their knowledge and experience.

Learn to fix a boat - even hand positing on tools has to be learned

The Boys In The Boat

The Sarasota Scullers had the opportunity to organize a showing of the long-expected movie the Boys In The Boat before the official start. Our Head Coach Bernhard Stomporowski organized early on a Saturday before Christmas at noon at the Regal Hollywood Theatre in Sarasota the showing. 89 seats had to be filled. In fear not to fill out all seats - the movie was also promoted to our friends of SCRC. Just days after we announced that we will be able to see the movie as a rowing community … the seats have been filled and we had to request a bigger room at the cinema. Finally, we could fill the biggest possible aula at the theatre and 129 rowers, friends from RowHouse to SCRC and the Scullers enjoyed (lots of tears) a wonderful American story … and that’s what rowing can do.

WE ALL SAW IT

Festivus 2023

Every year Alumni and friends are meeting at the Scullers Clubhouse or BoatYard and enjoy a friendly competition - share stories and bringing memories back to life. The event entirely organized by the athletes brought us this year together on the Intracoastal. Quads, Doubles and Eights raced in a three-hour event. Mixed teams made it fun for all again to participate and with close to 40 athletes the Head Coachs eyes were filled with tears of joy.

Become an ALUMNI or Friend of the Scullers

33 years of teaching rowing. Bringing young kids into boats and transform them into athletes and good members of our community.

Over a thousand of you are now working, living, studying in the greater Sarasota area and we want to have contact to you. In 2024 we opened the Scullers for you. The Sarasota Scullers Alumni group is started and is awaiting your membership. We want to hear from you, we want to see you back at the boatyard, we want to talk to you and we want the past to be a part of our present and future.

Our Head Coach already met several time with Betsy DeManio. She is one of the founders of our club. Billy Plifka, Sculler and WorldChampion is back at our home and coaching our kids. And more of our Alumni are returning to “active duty” :-)

Stay connected and become part of something bigger …. join our Alumni group HERE

Over time we will provide you with more information, you will be able to network and participate at our official events. Most importantly you will support our athletes into their way to the future.

Fundraising - GIVING TUESDAY

In December our Fundraiser the GIVING TUESDAY started. The small brother of the GIVING CHALLENGE (later this year 2024). Our team went out into the community and asked for donations which will support our team. Keeping our boats repaired, bringing more equipment into our Clubhouse and support our athletes with guest coaches and small training camps.

We crossed our ambitious 5000$ and want to THANK all the donors for their generous contributions. For more information … or even another donation find us HERE
