Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2024
beginning of the fall season 2024
The start of the school year brought with it a renewed sense of energy and determination for our athletes, returning to their rigorous training schedules. Throughout the summer months, we successfully held three summer camps, welcoming new faces to our boatyard community. Now, as we begin preparations for the first regatta events, the training has kicked into high gear. The scullers team is steadily growing in numbers, while all of our athletes are more motivated than ever before. With each passing day, the air crackles with anticipation and excitement for what lies ahead in this competitive season.
TRAINING FALL 2024
In order to accommodate the varying levels of commitment and ages amongst our athletes, the Scullers have implemented a new training system. Our dedicated team ranges from 11 to 19 years old, each with their own personal interests and goals. With this in mind, we have tailored a training regime for each individual based on their age and chosen discipline. A simple yet effective method that has yielded impressive results is outlined below:
SSYRP - TRAINING
Middle school athletes are invited to participate in our training program. Whether they have completed a learn-to-row program or are following a Learn-To-Train regime, we welcome all levels of experience. Our schedule for the week is posted every Saturday or Sunday on our designated WhatsApp group for communication. Join us and improve your skills as an athlete!
Who can be found at our High School Athlete Training Program? We focus on athletes who are currently in high school, ranging from beginners to seniors who may be feeling overwhelmed with homework and college preparation. These athletes train alongside our Performance Program. Due to time constraints - whether it be due to their beginner status or commitments outside of training - the regattas these athletes attend are usually local ones.
The Performance Program is designed for athletes looking to elevate their dedication and skill to the next level. Our program accommodates a range of ages, from Middle School to High School and beyond. Athletes will have six training sessions per week with the Scullers. Monthly testing will help track progress and improvements. The program also includes participation in regattas both locally and out of state, with the ultimate goal of preparing athletes to compete at the highest level in USRowing. Additionally, our program provides opportunities for athletes to connect with universities and colleges and potentially receive scholarships for rowing.
First Fundraiser 2024
The Scullers, a dedicated team of rowers, were eagerly anticipating the opportunity to invest in new boats and oars. In order to achieve this goal, our team organized a fundraiser at our local PUBLIX market (located at 6543 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34231). We are incredibly grateful for PUBLIX's support and generosity in allowing us to hold our fundraiser at their establishment. Not only did we successfully raise enough funds for our equipment, but our athletes also gained valuable experience in interacting with customers and managing transactions in this new environment. The bustling atmosphere of the market, with its colorful displays and lively chatter, provided an exciting backdrop for our team's fundraising efforts. It was a memorable and rewarding experience for all involved.

Our new MIDDLE SCHOOL COACH - Layla Wade
At the tender age of sixteen, Leila's passion for rowing blossomed on calm waters at the Sarasota Scullers. The first time she dipped her oars into the water, a sense of thrill and freedom washed over her. From that moment on, she was devoted to mastering this sport. With each visit to the tranquil waters, Leila's determination to excel grew stronger.
As she delved into serious training, Leila eagerly participated in regattas both in Florida and beyond for the Scullers team. She found solace in the camaraderie and support of her fellow rowers, forming bonds that would last a lifetime.
After graduating from high school, Leila embarked on a new journey at Manatee College. Despite the demands of her studies, she never let go of her love for rowing. Now, as she returns to the Scullers with a wealth of experience and passion, Leila is determined to inspire others and contribute to the team's success.

SHOES and SHOE PLATES
Transitioning from fixed club shoes to athlete-based shoes
The Scullers started transitioning from using the shoes offered from the club to a click-system in which every athlete can click his own shoes in any of the SSYRP boats. Why do we do this - see the reasons behind:
Improved ease of use & club experiences
Click in/click out – use your own shoes (that actually fit!!) in any boat or on the erg with the full QuickRelease system & fit more boats with additional BasePlates or more athletes with the ShoePlate Tops.
Gain speed & reduce injury
Supports greater gluteal control and use, better stability in the boat and the ergometer. Helps reduce the most common rowing injury risk factors.
Enhanced stability & connection
Improved foot support, greater engagement and enhanced heel load through the whole stroke gives you confidence, consistency and a stronger base for your drive, as well as improved boat trim and feel.
Increased performance
Enhanced leg muscle use, improved power and increased efficiency. Significant boat speed gains noted and proven at the top level with 17 Olympic medals and 16 World Records.
Better hygiene & personalisation
With more than 25% of the athletic population affected by fungal foot infections, do you really want to share shoes? Experience better hygiene, improved performance, greater comfort and fit as well as looking after your shoes better post row. Fits all major rowing shoes.
Science based & race proven
The design is based on analysis of 2000+ athletes and in-depth sports science research. Rowers using the ShoePlate have taken 17 Olympic medals including 7 Gold Medals. 300+ World Levels medals, numerous School, College and National Championships, plus 16 world records on-water and indoors.
New rowing shoes are available at many locations - here some of them:
