October 2023
... the month of the Head Races
October - finally fall and the temperatures are dropping
The Scullers are in fullswing training. During the month of October we welcomed several new members to our team and our “older” athletes have been busy to teach each of the the basics of our sport. For bringing boats safely to the dock, how to use a rigging tool, securing boats on the rack and and and.
Besides that, our team uses every day of the week to train - Monday to Saturday you find us on the IntraCostal, in our Clubhouse or the Twin Lakes Soccer field. After weeks of preparation our team was able to visit two regattas in the past 5 weeks. The Halloween Regatta in Tampa and the last of the BIG FALL REGATTAs the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga Tennessee.
Before we start our Newsletter … THANK YOU PARENTS for all your support throughout the month of October and November … you are all AMAZING
Shai saluting the world
Halloween Regatta Tampa
The Halloween Regatta is traditionally the first fall regatta the Scullers are visiting. Nearly our entire team went up to the Bypass in Tampa and enjoyed a busy day of rowing. Nearly all athletes have been able to row two events and some even three. The good night sleep was earned after this. Our young team was entered in a variety of races given their abilities. From the Novice to Varsity you could find Scullers participating.
Two results to mentions here:
Our Middle School 8+ placed fifth from about 20 entries. Three of our team just started rowing a few weeks ago but have been already eager to challenge the world. We want to congratulate our team. See the team picture below.
Ava is one of our “older” members already took the burden to start in the 1x. After already two races - her legs already shaky, she had a hell of a ride and finished 2nd in the field. Congrats from all of us (See her picture in her 1x race below)
Arriving and Rigging
Sophia - Iyar - Sydney - Ava
Luke and Leon (or lg 2x in 2024)
Nick in his 1x race … racing against 18 year opponents is still a challenge
… our Middle School 8+ … congrats
our team helps - Nick carries with his teammate the Middle School 8+ after their race
Ava … her last 1k to the finish line … hearing the joy from the shore from athletes and parents
the AMAZING Novices … Sage (stroke) Guiseppe Matej and Cameron (cox: Elena) … finished 7th out of 15. Well well done
Regatta HOOCH
Far away from home … exactly 12 hours driving through the night our team and the team of our Masters SCRC arrived at this amazing regatta in Chattanooga. Coach Bernhard arrived with his team in the early morning hours of Friday. Early rigging, securing a spot for our tent and testing the water for the first time. Every piece of that puzzle worked perfectly and we also welcomed back our coach Lyn.
Lyn was back to help our team … and even rowed with Eitan in the mixed 2x
We have been lucky with three days of sunshine and a perfect organized regatta. What all surprised was the strong current to the start line which forced all boats to launch an hour or more for their race and being back 15min later. Coach Stompo entered again every athlete in a minimum of two races, but some raced up to four times during this trip.
Some impressions from our trip:
the view from the High-Dock at the finish line
boat cluster returning after the race
Ava, back in her 1x
TeamDinner after an exhausting Saturday of Racing
Eitan and Anise figuring something out
together doing memories
Novice Races … the hardest especially when you just started rowing
Introducing two of our newest members
September and October are the month in which we welcome our newest members to the team. In this Newsletter we want to introduce two of them.
Lilly Moore
Lilly
What to know about Lilly. She is from Florida, born in Venice and she is a brave student of the Student Leadership Academy. Her last movie in the cinema was Spiderman. She enjoys going to the gym and her favorite color is red.
Her last book was The Bell Jar from her favorite writer Sylvia Plath. Impressed from literature she sees her future as a writer, preferable in Paris a city she really would like to visit.
What is her favorite drink you are asking … Coconut Water
Lilly is a great addition to our young team, and we will see her next at the Benderson Chase this weekend on Saturday.
Elton von Wowern
Elton
In October we welcomed Elton to our team. From day One he showed incredible enthusiasm and talent for our sport. Elton is a January 7th, 2010, child. He is born far far away from Florida in Taeby Sweden.
He is a clever athlete and beside being a rower in our team he also will be our cox for the upcoming two years, after that he will be grown out of this seat. He started his school career at Pineview and is a big soccer fan. In our soccer training sessions, he is regularly one of the first athletes be chosen for the team.
No wonder Messi is one of his favorite sport persons but secretly his idol is his dad. Southpark was his last movie in the cinema.
After asking about his future career …. Business Person was his straight answer (we are looking forward to having a financial good, situated Alumni :-)
He would love to go back to Sweden for holiday and drink his favorite drink there: Coca Cola. His favorite color is Tain and loved reading Prisoner B07.
What are Will and Caitlin doing?
It is now several months that Will and Caitlin left for school. Both of them settled in very well and joined their rowing program. After settling in both found their places in the team. We met Will at the Hooch regatta, and he was stroking the V2 8+ of his team. Congrats.
Will
Caitlin is now living in Virgina, and her school is Liberty University. Her major is Nursing and at 4am in the morning her day starts. Not a favorite wake up moment for her roommate :-) but Caitlin is determined and follows her strict rowing schedule. And she was busy, her team already raced three times in this fall, and she (and her father Greg) enjoy every moment of it. Go Caitlin Go.
